NYU Berlin

At NYU Berlin, students and alumni experience a cosmopolitan city that holds a complex and crucial place in modern European history. Youthful, artistic, and hip, Berlin has traveled a path that led from the defining cultural avant-garde of the Weimar Republic to the devastation of World War II, from a divided city symbolizing the Cold War to today’s reunified and renewed capital.

The program at NYU Berlin is designed for students in the social sciences and humanities who want to earn credit in their majors—including sociology, history, politics, studio art, environmental studies, European studies, and mathematics—while having a transformative experience abroad. Courses are taught in English, and German language courses are offered at all levels. Day trips and guided excursions in and around Berlin are included in the program.

The Global Research Institute in Berlin (GRI Berlin) is designed for faculty and graduate students who are interested in short-term stays lasting a semester, a summer, or sometimes even a year in Berlin. GRI Berlin hosts faculty from a range of schools and disciplines who are interested in working on both collaborative research initiatives and individual projects. Furthermore, each summer, GRI Berlin hosts an intensive dissertation-writing workshop to eight doctoral students in any discipline who are already in the advanced stages of their dissertation. An on-site faculty advisor provides general advice and moral support to the doctoral students. GRI Berlin also supports and funds conferences and workshops throughout the year, the most recent being Cultural Dimensions of Right Wing Extremism, led by Professor Cynthia Miller-Idriss from the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.
