New Looks and Good Books: Helping Kids Identify as Readers

Barbershop Books is a community-based literacy program founded by Alvin Irby (WAG ’15). The program creates child-friendly reading spaces in barbershops across the country and helps children connect the idea of reading with their cultural identity by providing reading opportunities in male-centered spaces.

Early in the 20th-century, students began to organize an annual performance, first vaudeville productions, then a series of comedy productions, referred to as the “senior show,” though cast and crew comprised of students from all years. Within a decade and a half, drama at NYU grew by leaps and bounds.
John Burnett (SPS ’06) is poised to start his fourth year on the Board, where he has served on the By-Laws and Fundraising committees. Additionally, John has established a new relationship with NYU; starting in fall 2017, he will be an adjunct professor for two courses: International Political Economy and Organizational Behavior.
Inspired by a chance meeting at a swim-up bar in Mexico, Helen Lee (TSOA ’97, GAL ’06) and Katy Romero (STERN ’13) decided to turn a classic "mom hack" into a business. AllPakt, backpacks filled with fun activities for kid travelers, help parents by providing portable entertainment—and a moment of peace.
